Xross-PolyNation: ten international artists

A refreshing new art experience this week for aficionados is Xross-PolyNation, an exhibition that showcases the works to ten noted artists from the US, the UK, Canada and Palestine...

...the artists have a shared international agenda that promotes cross-cultural exchange and a broad study and understanding of world concerns...

India born artist Ravinder Kalsi went to England as a refugee in 1970 and has lived there since then. She grew up amongst the Anglo-Indians of Calcutta. Her work explores the semiotics, multi-cultural, internationalism and decolonisation of the Anglo-Indians in today's context.

Through her images she introduces an element of paradox and uncertainty. For her utopia is a combination of art, philosophy and poetry. She says, "My images depict my past means of living and my utopian hopes for the future. I reinvented traditional picture frames in a sculptured way to display digital artwork incorporating light and sound to enhance my images. The movement it provides has a kinetic feel to the piece, and the light projected illusions help to de-materialise the spaces they are in. The light and sound which includes noises, complete the sensory experience."

Ravinder was a nominee for the Rouse Kent Award for 'Public Art' 2003. She is a Millennium Award Medal Winner 2004. In 2005, she has major exhibitions in New Delhi, Edinburgh and London. Her project for Future Hope Children's Charity has been adopted by HSBC and will have its inaugural exhibition in April this year in London. It is expected to become an annual international, multi-cultural event similar to the Biennale.
